Goal 15: Conservation of terrestrial ecosystems

POLICY sustainable development protection of terrestrial ecosystems
ABSTRACT
The Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (IAPM) pays attention to supporting Sustainable Development Goal 15, focusing on life on land through a number of initiatives and policies. The Academy actively promotes education and awareness of land ecosystem conservation and sustainable land use. It organizes events, offers educational programs on flora and fauna, and informs about sustainable land use.

The institution has developed policies to ensure a sustainable food supply on campus, reduce plastic waste, and promote clean water standards. In addition, the Academy actively interacts with local communities and collaborates with external organizations on projects related to the protection of land ecosystems and sustainable development. The Academy's activities extend to the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including forests, mountains and arid areas. The institution also prioritizes the protection of species listed in the Red Data Book and the National Protection List.
While the campus takes proactive measures to minimize impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, it does not have a specific policy on alien species management. Nevertheless, it has demonstrated a commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and reducing carbon emissions.
In summary, the Academy's efforts reflect a strong commitment to the conservation and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems in line with the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 15.

CURRENT SITUATION
Our Academy has a policy to make sure that food on campus is grown sustainably. According to the agreements concluded with corporations, preference should be given to crops used for food on campus among products grown using sustainable agriculture methods. This creates a policy that encompasses companies from which services are purchased and other supply chain participants, and supports sustainable agriculture.

The Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (IAPM) actively engages in the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems associated with the Academy. The institutes of IAPM in the Kyiv, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi regions are involved in the sustainable management and protection of forest areas, while the Prykarpattia Institute named after Mykhailo Hrushevskyi focuses on the preservation of mountain ecosystems in the Carpathian region. These initiatives contribute to maintaining biodiversity and promoting responsible environmental stewardship.

The Academy also works to identify, monitor, and protect species listed in the IUCN Red List as well as those included in the national conservation lists that inhabit areas influenced by the Academy’s activities. Through regular ecological assessments and cooperation with environmental organizations, IAPM ensures the preservation of vulnerable species and their natural habitats, reinforcing its commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable environmental management.

The Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (IAPM) is taking active steps to reduce the impact of alien and invasive species on its campuses. The Academy regularly monitors green areas, gardens, and surrounding ecosystems to detect and control non-native species that may threaten local biodiversity. These actions are guided by sustainable environmental practices and align with international biodiversity protection standards.

In collaboration with local environmental authorities and experts, IAPM implements preventive and management measures such as habitat restoration, awareness campaigns, and the replacement of invasive plants with native species. Through these initiatives, the Academy aims to create a balanced and healthy campus ecosystem that supports indigenous flora and fauna while minimizing ecological disruption.

Aims and objectives of IAPM:

  •  the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems associated with the IAPM in particular forests and mountains;
  • determination of the complex influence of evolutionary and environmental factors on the formation of the structure of wild fauna and flora;
  • familiarizing students with the species composition of flora and fauna;
  • teaching students the role of climate, relief and other biogeographical barriers in the distribution of fauna and flora across landscapes;
  • mastering the conservation of fauna and flora, which is the main condition for the sustainable development of biodiversity;
  • identification, monitoring and protection of IUCN Red Listed species and national conservation list species with habits in areas affected by the operation of the Academy.
  • reduction of the impact of alien and invasive species on its campuses.

The Academy offers an educational and outreach programs for local and national communities on sustainable land management for agriculture and tourism.
The Academy successfully operates a postgraduate and doctoral program that conducts scientific research, including problems related to the protection of terrestrial ecosystems. The results of such research are successfully published in eleven own scientific professional journals and national and international scientific professional journals.
Completed scientific research is successfully defended in four permanent specialized academic councils.
IAPM also conducts long-term general academic research that addresses issues related to the protection of terrestrial ecosystems on the following topics:

PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

The Academy plans to organize annual monitoring in the habitat, conduct outreach to the local population, etc. Students will also be involved in this outreach work.

Sustainable procurement and cooperation: IAPM's participation in sustainable procurement covers not only the activities of the Academy campus, but also extends to cooperation with regional, national and international organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations. The commitment to sustainable practices at IAPM is demonstrated through the active participation of its employees in various projects. These joint efforts are an example of our commitment to promoting sustainable development in the Academy and beyond.
