Interregional Academy of Personnel Management provide a number of off-campus activities to support practical water conservation.
Water conservation in Kyiv
There are at least 400 water bodies in Kyiv. Pollution of the city's internal water bodies with petroleum products remains a serious problem, associated with intensive pollution of stormwater runoff caused by the growing number of vehicles parked in parking lots, garages, gas stations without local treatment facilities, and fuel and lubricant unloading points in the Kyiv River Port.
The Research Center for Environmental Safety and Sustainable Development of the IAPM brought together scientists and ecologists on the development and use of highly effective modern wastewater treatment methods. These initiatives are designed specifically for local communities of Kyiv.
The Research Center for Environmental Safety and Sustainable Development teaches representatives and ecologists of the local community of Kyiv on the constant anthropogenic load on the city's water bodies caused by pollution of internal water bodies with industrial wastewater and surface runoff, including the expansion of the volumes of recycled water consumption and wastewater reuse, the creation of closed technological production facilities, the use of highly effective modern methods of wastewater treatment. In addition, students under the guidance of lecturers of the IAPM annually conduct 3-4 actions to clean the Dnipro River.
Water conservation in Yagotyn
In Yagotyn, the IAPM organized an Ecological Club, which includes students and lecturers of the Institute, precisely for the purpose of conservation of reservoirs in the area of Yagotyn. The situation in this region is currently unsatisfactory and is on the verge of an ecological disaster. The problems arose due to the lack of regular work on cleaning ponds from silt, insufficient funding from local budgets and state structures, as well as the negligent attitude of tenants to natural resources.
The main attention of scientists and students of the IAPM is focused on two main ponds- Lake Velyky Supii and Lake Malyy Supii. For many years, these lakes did not receive the necessary care: work on cleaning the silt and deepening the ponds was not carried out, which negatively affected their ecological condition. Instead of systematic care, the lakes were transferred to local entrepreneurs who used barbaric methods of operating the ponds. Entrepreneurs often resorted to the practice of completely discharging water through the locks, which allowed them to easily catch fish. Such activities have led to serious consequences, including silting of natural sources in the lake, lowering of water levels, mass deaths of fish, crayfish and fry. These processes have caused a catastrophic decrease in the level of groundwater in wells throughout the Yagotyn community, which has affected the lives of local residents.
Scientists and students of the IAPM have developed and are consistently implementing a number of specific measures aimed at improving the state of water conservation off campus in the territory of the Yagotyn community. IAPM, in cooperation with local authorities, environmental activists and public organizations, has developed a Strategy for the Conservation of Water Resources of the Yagotyn community.
IAPM not only studies water conservation problems, but also actively participates in their solution. The purpose of the activities conducted by the Academy is not only to preserve the water resources of the Yagotyn community, but also to form a responsible attitude towards nature and environmental awareness among the younger generation, because involving young people in environmental issues is a step towards preserving natural resources for future generations.
